Jeff Forster - James McCahon: Still /Form

Sept 6 - Sept 27, 2025

Still/Form brings together the work of Houston-based artists Jeff Forster and James McAhon, two practices that appear distinct yet share a deep sensitivity to material and structure. Forster, ceramicist and head of the ceramics department at the Glassell School of Art, works with alternative firing methods that embrace unpredictability. His surfaces, at times raw and industrial, reveal unexpected colors and textures shaped by process and transformation. For this exhibition, he presents smaller works that place greater emphasis on form and line while retaining his sense of alchemy.

McAhon, a painter originally from California, offers a counterpoint of clarity and rhythm. His recent series, including a group of miniatures, reveals a precise balance in composition and palette. Architectural in character, his paintings hold the eye through their calm restraint.

The decision to present these two artists together arises from the ways their practices resonate beyond medium. Both explore structure, edges, and transformation, whether through the fire of the kiln or the discipline of paint. In dialogue, their works reveal a balance between rough and refined, spontaneous and deliberate, earthy and composed. This is the essence of Still/Form.
